Connecticut State Permit (HUT)
To address road maintenance needs in the state, Connecticut imposes a tax that is calculated by measuring the miles you drive on their public highways. Distinct from the fuel tax from IFTA, this tax is calculated separately.
Understanding the Connecticut Highway Use Tax (HUT)
The Connecticut Highway Use Tax (HUT) is a mileage tax that went into effect on January 1, 2023. It applies to any motor carrier operating a vehicle with a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more on Connecticut’s public highways. This tax is imposed to address maintenance and so is based on the weight of the vehicle and the number of miles traveled on any public highway in the state. The tax is filed quarterly.
Compliance is Mandatory
It is important to note that this tax is mandatory. Failure to comply with Connecticut’s Highway Use Tax can result in penalties including, but not limited to: fines, audits, or even imprisonment.
