DOT & MC Registration

Understanding the difference between a USDOT Number and an MC Authority is crucial for compliance. We can help you secure both.

USDOT Number

A United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Number is a unique identification number issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This is used to track a company’s safety record, compliance, and operations.

You must have a USDOT number if you operate:

  • A vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 10,000 lbs in interstate commerce
  • A vehicle that transports passengers for compensation (9 or more people, including the driver)
  • A vehicle that transports hazardous materials requiring placards

Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate operations (operating only within one state) if your vehicles meet the criteria above.

MC Authority (Motor Carrier Number)

A Motor Carrier Authority (MC) Number is issued by the FMCSA and it authorizes a company to transport goods or passengers for hire across state lines or to operate as a freight broker.

You need an MC Number if you:

  • Transport freight across state lines
  • Transport passengers across state lines for hire
  • Operate as a broker, arranging transportation for others
  • Run a for-hire carrier, meaning you’re paid to move someone else’s freight

Important: Most trucking companies need both a USDOT Number and an MC Number, depending on their operations.

To have our service team help figure out whether you need one or both numbers, contact us here with your information, your total miles for the last twelve months, and the number of motor vehicles in your fleet that exceed a GVWR of 10,000 lbs.
