IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement between the 48 connected U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Its purpose is to simplify fuel tax reporting for motor carriers that operate across borders.

How IFTA Works

A vehicle qualifies for an IFTA license if it has three or more axles, or its gross vehicle weight exceeds 26,000 lbs. An IFTA license allows all fuel taxes paid to be credited to a carrier's account.

  • At the end of each quarter, the carrier reports all miles traveled and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
  • A single form is then used to calculate the tax liability for each jurisdiction.

Quarterly Deadlines

IFTA reports are collected quarterly. The deadlines are as follows:

  • January to March: April 30th
  • April to June: July 31st
  • July to September: October 31st
  • October to December: January 31st

Note: If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it is extended to the next business day.

Excluded Jurisdictions

In the U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington D.C. are excluded from IFTA. In Canada, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut are excluded.
