Kentucky State Permit (KYU Tax)
When operating on Kentucky’s public highways, you need to pay a tax depending on how much you use their roads. This is different from the fuel tax imposed by IFTA.
Understanding the Kentucky Weight-Distance (KYU) Tax
The Kentucky Weight-Distance (KYU) Tax is a mileage-based tax imposed on motor carriers operating on Kentucky highways. Any motor carrier operating a vehicle with a gross weight of 60,000 pounds or more needs to file this tax. The tax is filed quarterly and is based on the miles traveled in Kentucky and the vehicle’s weight.
Compliance is Mandatory
This tax is mandatory and noncompliance can result in fines, audits, or potentially, imprisonment.
We can help you navigate this process and ensure that you stay within compliance regardless of where your motor carrier operates. Find out more about the KYU tax or other state regulations here.
