Onsite BIT Inspection

The Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) is conducted by the California Highway Patrol. This is specific to California, although similar inspections may occur in other states, under different names.

Purpose of the BIT Program

The purpose is to assess whether a commercial motor carrier is properly maintaining and operating its vehicles, that safety standards are being met, and that maintenance practices are in line with regulations.

What We Inspect

The items inspected include:

  • Vehicle Maintenance Records
  • Driver Files
  • Hours of Service (Bill of Lading, Fuel receipts, and ELDS/log books)
  • Drug and alcohol testing compliance
  • Insurance documentation

Inspection Frequency

This usually occurs within the first or second year of a business’s operation. Existing carriers may be subjected to additional inspections every few years or as needed based on safety performance.
